Project Management Office (PMO)

In our experience having an effective scalable Project Management Office (PMO) acting as the nerve centre for all projects within the corporate portfolio is essential and as such should be set up in such a way that allows it to succeed

The reasons PMOs fail and end up being considered to be a Project overhead are many and varied but include:

  • A lack of Executive sponsorship
  • No empowerment to enforce or to change existing behaviours
  • Inflexibility of approach, i.e. restricted  by rigid policies, standards, governance etc
  • Little grasp of project scalability, i.e. has a one size fits all mentality
  • Perpetual under investment leads to complacency
  • Project Management Office has the wrong PMO Lead
  • PMO has no agreed measurement of success
